What was announced
The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) says World Boxing has selected its bid to host the 2028 African Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament, to be held in August 2027 [1][2]. World Boxing's Director of Events, Paulo Ferreira, confirmed the decision to the GBF in an email dated 21 October 2026, writing: “We are happy to confirm that your bid has been successfully selected” [1].

How Ghana won the bid
Abuja, Nigeria, was provisionally awarded hosting rights in early August 2026, subject to submitting key documents [1]. Ghana's bid, led by GBF president Dauda Fuseni, was then selected after a review by the World Boxing Executive Board [1].
“It is very crucial we get the nod to host this prestigious event,” Fuseni told Graphic Online. “We are very excited about the news, and we assure Africa that we are going to host this competition in fairness with great humility and integrity” [1].
What it means for Ghanaian boxers
A home qualifier gives Ghana's amateur boxers a rare advantage: no travel, familiar conditions, and home support on the road to Los Angeles 2028. Fuseni said the tournament “will give us the opportunity to qualify more boxers than usual for the Olympic Games” [1].
The practical effect: every African boxer who wants to fight at LA 2028 will have to come through a tournament hosted in Ghana.

What happens next
The hosting is not final until a Host City Agreement is formalised between the International Olympic Committee and Ghana [2]. World Boxing says work on that agreement is under way [1]. The agreement typically sets out who pays for security, medical services and infrastructure [2].
According to MyJoy, the government - through the Ministry for Sports and Recreation and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly - is expected to carry the local costs, while the GBF provides operational support and expertise [2]. A venue has not been announced.
World Boxing congratulated the GBF and warned that preparation starts immediately: “The work begins now. There’s no time at all. We are only 9 months away” [1].
If you are watching from abroad
For Ghanaians in Ireland, the UK and beyond, this is the rare chance to watch an Olympic qualifier at home - or to plan an August 2027 trip around it. Ticketing, venue and broadcast details have not been announced; we will update this story when they are.
