What happened
Dr Hazel P. Berrard Amuah and her daughter, Adwuwa Fynna Nhyira Berrard Quayson, were among the newly qualified lawyers called to the Ghana Bar on Friday, 9 October 2026. They are now Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Ghana [1].
One ceremony, two generations: a mother with a 28-year corporate career and her daughter, sworn in as lawyers side by side.
The mother: a second act at the top
Dr Hazel is no stranger to reinvention. According to the MyJoy report of the ceremony [1]:
- She was the first female Chief Executive Officer of Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, a role she held until April 2024.
- Her corporate career spans more than 28 years across 22 countries in West and Central Africa, in human resources, insurance, organisational development and business strategy.
- She founded the consultancy People Factory Limited in 2009, and the Reach Out and Share Foundation, which supports underserved communities.
- She has written six books, including Winning in the Jungle and 50 Lessons and Blessings, and picked up honours such as Ghana Woman Professional of the Year (2018) and Africa HR Personality of the Year (2020).
The daughter: her own path
For Nhyira Berrard Quayson, the call is the start of her own legal career - earned at the same ceremony as her mother's. The two now hold the same professional qualification, taken together, and begin separate careers from it [1].
Why this one travels
Plenty of Ghanaians abroad are quietly plotting a second act - a law degree, a new qualification, a business started at 50. This story is the reminder that professional ambition has no age bracket: a mother can add the Bar to a full corporate life, and a daughter can start there, on the same morning.
