Your UK-born child is Ghanaian too. Sort the paperwork before the trip.
Citizenship by descent, the Ghana Card, a first passport, and what dual registration actually does. Sort it months before the family visit, not at the airport.

Plenty of us leave this late. The flights are booked for December, and in October someone asks: does the little one need a visa? Is she Ghanaian? Does she need the card? The answers are good news, mostly, but they come with queues and waiting times, so the order you do things in matters.
One thing up front: this is a guide, not legal advice. Rules and fees change, and the High Commission's word beats any article, including this one.
Your child is probably already Ghanaian
Ghana passes citizenship by descent: a child born abroad to a Ghanaian parent is generally a Ghanaian citizen by birth, whether or not any paperwork has been done. The paperwork does not create the citizenship - it proves it. That proof is what you need for everything else: a birth certificate, and evidence of the Ghanaian parent's own citizenship, such as their passport. [1]
This matters for the trip because a Ghanaian citizen can hold a Ghanaian passport, and since April 2025 that passport is a new chip-embedded one. It also matters because of the Ghana Card, which now does something genuinely useful at the border. [1]
The choice for the flight: Ghana passport, UK passport plus visa, or Ghana Card
A UK-born child travelling on a British passport needs a visa to enter Ghana, and visas cost money and processing time. A child with a Ghanaian passport enters as a citizen. And dual citizens can now enter Ghana visa-free using a valid Ghana Card - which is why the card has moved from nice-to-have to worth-sorting for families who travel often. [1]
For a first family visit, many parents simply get the child a Ghanaian passport. It doubles as proof of citizenship for life, and it avoids the visa queue in both directions of planning. The trade-off is time: diaspora applications currently take six to eight weeks after the biometric appointment, so this is a job for now, not for the week before you fly. [1]
Getting the first passport from the UK
The process starts online at the Ghana passport portal (passport.mfa.gov.gh) and ends in person. The current steps: [1]
- Apply online with a verifiable email and phone number. Fees are paid online by card only - missions do not take cash. Standard UK processing is £110.
- Line up two guarantors and one professional witness. Guarantors must be adults who have known the applicant for at least two years; relatives are allowed. The witness must be a recognised professional - a lawyer, doctor, senior civil servant or police officer - who lives in the UK, has known the applicant for two years, and cannot also be a guarantor. For a young child, expect the guarantors to stand behind the parents' application details.
- Attend biometrics in person at the High Commission or a designated enrolment centre, with the child's original documents: the birth certificate, the Ghanaian parent's passport, and the child's UK passport if they have one.
- Bring a prepaid, tracked return envelope - Royal Mail Special Delivery is the usual choice - because passports are returned by post, not collected.
Then wait. Six to eight weeks is the guidance for diaspora applications; inside Ghana it is fifteen days. [1]
The Ghana Card: what it does and who needs one
The Ghana Card is now a primary, mandatory requirement for first-time adult passport applicants living abroad, and registration is possible from the UK: start online at register.nia.gov.gh, complete a virtual interview, and capture biometrics at the mission. Children can be registered too - the National Identification Authority runs registration for Ghanaians living abroad. [1][2]
The practical prize: a valid Ghana Card lets a dual citizen enter Ghana without a visa. For a family that visits every year or two, that can eventually spare everyone the visa routine. [1]
Dual citizenship registration: what it actually does
Dual citizenship registration is the Ministry of the Interior's formal recognition that you hold Ghanaian and another citizenship at once. It uses Form 10, costs GH₵500 for the form plus a GH₵100 processing fee, and the ministry quotes about a month once a complete application is in. For a child born outside Ghana, the application needs the birth certificate, the Ghanaian parent's passport, and copies of the child's passports. [3]
Here is the part people get wrong: after the Supreme Court's Asare v Attorney-General ruling, dual nationals are recognised as citizens by operation of the Constitution, so the registration certificate is not mandatory for a Ghanaian passport application if you can prove citizenship directly. Registration is still worth doing for the certainty it gives at banks, borders and offices later - but it is not the gate it is often sold as. [1]
One boundary to know: the "1996 rule". Someone who did not hold primary Ghanaian citizenship by 31 December 1996 does not qualify for dual citizenship registration and is pointed to a Right of Abode application instead. [1]
A timeline that works
Working backwards from a December trip: start the passport application in October, because of the six-to-eight-week wait. Book biometrics as soon as the portal lets you. Register for Ghana Cards alongside, since the card covers future trips. Leave dual citizenship registration for after the visit if time is short - it is useful, but it is not what gets your child through the airport.
Sources and data note
Prepared 9 October 2026. Fees and processing times are the most recent published figures we could verify - £110 and six to eight weeks from an April 2026 guide, GH₵500 and GH₵100 from the Interior Ministry page checked today. Confirm both with the Ghana High Commission in London before you pay.
