Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has received the 2026 Arnold Bode Prize in Kassel, Germany. The city confirms that the €10,000 honour was presented at the Kasseler Kunstverein on 29 October, with documenta sixteen artistic director Naomi Beckwith delivering the tribute.

The sacks that became a landmark

Mahama's connection to Kassel is visible in the city's memory of documenta 14 in 2017. He wrapped the Torwache buildings in a patchwork of used jute sacks, with parts from Henschel locomotives incorporated into the work.

These were materials with a working life before they entered an exhibition. Documenta describes sacks previously used to carry cocoa, coal and other goods. His installations bring the labour and movement behind everyday commodities into view.

Recognition abroad, spaces at home

The prize citation also points to Mahama's work in Tamale. International success has gone alongside a longer project: creating places where other artists can work and young people can encounter art.

Documenta dates the opening of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art to 2019, followed by Red Clay Studios in 2020 and Nkrumah Volini in 2021. It describes exhibition spaces, research facilities, artist residencies and continuing education programmes for children and young people.

For Ghana's diaspora, that is the story beyond another international trophy: an artist recognised for changing the scale of his work while building room for others back home.
